A lot of parents and students come to us with a desire to learn a musical instrument, but they aren’t quite sure which one.
Below are some of the considerations that should be taken into account be
fore trialling an instrument.
Age
Age is a very important indicator of what instrument a student should start learning. Most children under the age of 4 are not quite ready to learn an individual instrument. Programs such as our kinder classes are a great way to introduce kids to music until they are ready to pick up violin or piano.
Piano and strings are a great first instrument choice as they both teach a child to coordinate the use of their hands and eyes, laying the foundations to learn other instruments in the future. As your child gets older, the range of instruments they can learn increases.
Size
The size of your child, much like age, will dictate what instruments they can learn. Size obviously goes hand in hand with age. As your child grows, they will become more adept to handling those slightly larger musical instruments.
Teeth
Many woodwind instruments require the use of teeth when mastering playing techniques. Therefore, we generally insist on a student having their front two adult teeth before commencing clarinet or saxophone lessons.
Passion
A very important consideration, particularly for adults and older children, is what instrument interests you the most. If somebody is passionate about an instrument, then it’s a pretty strong indication that it should be the starting point or overall aim.
Have a think about the factors we’ve mentioned above and how they apply to you or your child. Feel free to give us a call to discuss your options.
